Intro to Marketing & Self-Promo (WK1) - "Give It a Voice"
If you've read my previous blogs, you know that typography is the bane of my existence. I understand the importance, and I absolutely love seeing beautiful, creative typefaces...but having to choose and pair different typefaces together...ugh. But we persist, and I think I'm starting to make some progress here!
Here's our assignment prompt:
"For this assignment, you will explore how different typographic directions communicate tone, personality, and cultural influence for your restaurant. You are not choosing 'the final fonts' yet. You are defining possible typographic voices that could authentically support your brand. Your goal is to test how type can express the same experience you described in your dining narrative. You must create at least two distinct typographic directions."
Since I struggle with this, I asked ChatGPT to generate some ideas that I could build on. Below are ChatGPT's typographic suggestions:
I liked the overall aesthetic Chat generated, and it helped me analyze what I did and didn't want in developing my own typographic directions. I knew I wanted to keep the fantasy/celestial/whimsical feeling, while also being legible and easy to read, especially in low lighting (I'm sure we've all had to pull out our cellphone flashlights in a restaurant at one point or another, and no one enjoys that). I went through every single font family I have...twice. And then I went through Adobe Fonts...most of them...twice. I wanted to make sure all of the directions had a different vibe, but still met my requirements. Those requirements were:
- Fantasy
- Magical
- Legible
- Able to read in low lighting
- Resembles a spellbook/apothecary, without being gimmicky
- Not too harsh (still whimsical), but still professional
Typographic Direction 1: Celestial Ritual Elegance
Typreface Examples:
- Headlines: Last Christmas
- Expressive high-contrast script with sweeping flourishes and decorative terminals
- Subheadings: Minion Variable Concept
- Refined transitional serif with balanced stroke contrast
- Body Text: ArponaSans
- Lightweight serif italic with open spacing for readability
Headline: Steeped in Starlight
Subhead: A Ritual of Heat, Herb, and Harmony
Body Text: From miso-laced croquettes to jasmine-steamed seafood, each dish is composed to unfold gradually.
Subhead: A Ritual of Heat, Herb, and Harmony
Body Text: From miso-laced croquettes to jasmine-steamed seafood, each dish is composed to unfold gradually.
Emotional Tone:
Refined, warm, and ceremonial, with a sense of enchantment and whimsy.
Guest Feeling:
Guests should feel welcomed into something intentional and elevated, calm but curious, rather than overwhelmed.
Support for Dining Experience:
The flowing headline reflects infusion, steam, and ritual pacing, while the structured subhead and body text ground the experience in real food and technique. The hierarchy mirrors the meal itself: atmosphere first, then clarity, then sensory detail.
Alignment with Positioning & Audience:
This direction speaks to design-aware, culturally curious diners who enjoy immersive environments and subtle fantasy without novelty.
Cultural Support:
The typography draws from classic calligraphic tradition rather than imitating specific cultural styles, allowing the fusion to live in the food, not the letterforms.
Applications:
Logo, entry signage, website hero sections, special menus, packaging, and event materials.
Typographic Direction 2: Mystical Narrative Atmosphere
Typeface Examples:
- Headlines: Connemara Old Style
- Stylized decorative display serif with irregular, expressive character forms
- Subheads: IM FELL English SC
- Small caps serif emphasizing structure and hierarchy
- Body Text: Candara
- Clean modern serif with generous spacing for legibility
Headline: Where the Night Gathers
Subhead: Savory Tiers Beneath Celestial Light
Body Text: Spanish structure meets Asian nuance in dishes shaped by smoke, herb, and heat, presented as an immersive sequence rather than individual plates.
Explanation:
Emotional Tone:
Mysterious, atmospheric, confident, and narrative-driven.
Guest Feeling:
Guests should feel intrigued and transported while remaining grounded in trust and clarity about the dining experience.
Support for Dining Experience:
The expressive headline suggests discovery and layered storytelling, mirroring the tiered progression of plates and fusion of traditions. Clear supporting text keeps the concept grounded and understandable, maintaining a balance between imagination and professionalism.
Alignment with Positioning & Audience:
This direction fits guests who enjoy story-driven spaces, fantasy literature, and thoughtfully designed experiences that feel transportive but credible.
Cultural Support:
The typography evokes folklore and narrative tradition abstractly rather than referencing specific cultural scripts, maintaining respect while supporting thematic cohesion.
Applications:
Feature menu spreads, website storytelling sections, social campaigns, and seasonal promotions.
Typographic Direction 3: Heritage & Depth
Typeface Examples:
Headlines: Pentz
Blackletter-inspired display type conveying historic weight and authority

Alignment with Positioning & Audience:
Appeals to diners who value depth, intention, and authenticity, ensuring the brand does not feel purely atmospheric or themed.
Cultural Support:
Historical typographic influence adds weight without referencing specific cultures directly. This direction avoids stereotypes while reinforcing heritage and ritual themes, keeping the fusion respectful and subtle.
