Intro to Marketing & Self-Promo (WK1) - "Give it a Form"

Now on to designing a visual form to represent our restaurant!

Here's our prompt:

"You have defined the experience, strategy, voice, behavior, and name of your restaurant. Now you begin translating meaning into visual form. This assignment is about exploration, not perfection. Professional designers do not start with one idea and polish it. They search. Your goal is to explore multiple visual concepts for your brand before committing to a final direction.

You must produce:
  • A minimum of 20 logo thumbnails
  • Three refined logo concepts (comps)
Your thumbnails may be hand-sketched or digitally sketched.

They must show:
  • different symbolic ideas
  • different structural approaches
  • different uses of letterform and shape
Do not submit variations of the same idea."

Here are my 20 thumbnails:

I liked the idea of drawing a logo/symbol that would represent the business, which I could add Nightshade & Nectar to later if I chose one of the symbols without words. Since it is an alliteration, I also liked the idea of using one or two N's to represent the name. As you'll see below, I chose to use simple linework and mostly black-and-white contrast, as it worked cohesively with my overall design plan. I'm still playing with the idea of using 2-3 different fonts for the name because I really love the contrast, but I also like how clean it looks when using the same font throughout.

*EDIT*: I did not use my type exploration for my original submission. I have edited the logos:

I believe these are the strongest 3 of the designs I came up with:

Concept Direction 1: Botanical Balance

The logo uses a divided circular form to visually represent the duality within the name Nightshade & Nectar. One half features a botanical sprig, referencing herbal influence and culinary roots, while the other half contains a single droplet, symbolizing nectar, infusion, and warmth. The strong vertical split creates balance between shadow and sweetness. The circular enclosure reinforces unity and ritual, avoiding literal food imagery while communicating harmony and intentional contrast through simple form.

Concept Direction 2: Ritual Glow

This concept centers on a candle framed by symmetrical botanical branches, contained within a circular boundary. This idea stems from the centerpiece concept I spoke about in a previous assignment, where there would be a candle or light source inside an orb-like vessel to mimic a crystal ball. The candle represents ritual and warmth, while the surrounding leaves connect to herbal tradition and ingredient-driven craft. The composition feels grounded and ceremonial rather than decorative. By using a single flame as the focal point, the mark suggests intimacy and atmosphere without relying on overt mystical symbolism. The balance of symmetry and structure communicates calm confidence and hospitality.

Concept Direction 3: Lunar Infusion

The logo combines a crescent moon with a teacup silhouette, visually merging celestial atmosphere with tea-centered ritual. A droplet suspended from the crescent reinforces the idea of infusion and nectar, while the cup grounds the concept in dining and shared experience. The curved forms create a gentle, upward motion that feels reflective and immersive. The mark avoids literal witchcraft imagery and instead communicates mood through simplified shapes and negative space, balancing fantasy with credibility.
