Digital Publishing (WK1) - Design Blog
Week 1, I worked on a design project that focused on creating a two-page magazine spread in Adobe InDesign. The assignment was to write an article about one of our hobbies and then design the layout as an editorial piece. I chose to write about sewing and designing custom ravewear since it is something I spend a lot of time doing outside of school. It felt natural to design something around a topic I care about.
One thing I learned during this project is how important layout is when presenting written content. Writing the article was only part of the process. Once I brought the text into InDesign, I had to think about how the reader would move through the page. Setting up columns, placing images, and organizing sections helped guide the eye through the article. It made me realize that design choices affect how people experience the information on the page.
I also learned more about working with typography. Seeing how different fonts interact helped me understand how typography creates structure in a layout. Section headers, body text, and pull quotes each serve a purpose and help break up the content so the page does not feel overwhelming.
Using InDesign also helped me practice working with alignment and spacing. These tools helped keep everything organized and consistent across both pages of the spread. I also experimented with placing circular images within the layout so the visuals supported the story I was telling.
This project helped me see how writing and design work together. The article communicates the message, and the layout helps present that message in a clear and engaging way. It was also interesting to apply design skills to something related to my own creative work.
