Digital Publishing (WK1) - Project 1: Hobby Spread
For our first project, we were tasked with writing a 2-page article spread featuring at least 3 photos discussing one of our hobbies or interests. Naturally, I chose sewing and the rave community!
I learned so much while working on this project. So far, I really like InDesign. It feels very user-friendly if you've had any experience with other Adobe programs. I learned how spacing can really affect how legible an article is, as I had to play around with this quite a bit to get it right. I also knew I wanted to include an enlarged quote panel, which I promptly learned needed to be a group before applying text wrapping. I kept losing my text until I figured this out.
Figuring out where to place the images was a bit of a challenge, as I knew I wanted to use circular frames. That changed the page layout a lot as I was editing because of their shape, but overall, I think it worked in the end. I also chose these images specifically because they are a real reflection of my brand. I made every outfit shown, and each person has a story. For example, my friend Emily (the top photo on the first page) is diabetic and has difficulty finding comfortable ravewear that also supports and protects her insulin pump. Because I make everything custom and by hand, we can work together to create comfortable, functional outfits that she loves.
Typography, per usual (*side-eye*), was a problem. But it took me much less time to find what I had in mind, so I'd call that a win. For the heading, I wanted something that felt like a fashion magazine, fun but still easy to read. I went with Lust Display (Adobe Fonts), which is also the same font I used for the enlarged quote, though I italicized that. For the subheading, I wanted it to be bold, but not completely take away from the heading. I chose Source Sans Bold Italic because it's legible and looks cohesive with the heading font. I also used variations of Source Sans throughout the article, with changes to the leading and kerning for legibility and visual appeal.
